An article featuring me and my works has been published on the web magazine.

Several of my works are also featured in the article. I would be happy if you took the time to have a look:

The text was written by me and corrected by Ms. Catherine Lemaître, a professor in the art course I am currently taking at “Institut Français”.

“l’École des Artistes” is managed by Ms. Lemaître along with 3 other art specialists.

(Please find the English translation below. I’m posting this article by dividing into 2 parts.)

A French-speaking Artist from Japan: Atsuko Kawamata, Landscape Painter (Tokyo) / Part II

<YOUR TECHNIQUE>

I mainly paint with oil, sometimes adding materials like sand.

I use palette knives and finish with brushes or my fingers.

Rather than following any specific technique, I rely on intuition. I layer the colors I love as they come to me, without overthinking.

<3 Works>

“Menton” (2010–2013) / size: F12

 One of the paintings from my “2 French Seas” series for L’Artisan Parfumeur, a French perfume brand.

 They asked me to create a series of paintings inspired by “the scents of journey.” I began with Istanbul, followed by Seville, and then the 2 French seas: the Mediterranean and the Atlantic.

Between 2010 and 2013, I created around 12 works for each of the three themes, working over periods ranging from two weeks to a month.

 L’Artisan Parfumeur organized several solo exhibitions of my paintings at their boutique in Omotesando (Tokyo), as well as at department stores in Tokyo and Osaka.

 It was truly a serendipitous collaboration, as l’Artisan happens to be my most favorite brand !

(On the page of “École des Artistes”, as shown below, a representative work from each campaign for L’Artisan Parfumeur is also featured. “Menton” is the final blue painting.)

2. 「la Plage Rouge」, Collioure (2023-2024) / size:P15

Collioure, the birthplace of Fauvism, has fascinated me ever since I began painting. I’ve returned there many times.

In this work, I painted a yellow sky to contrast with the red of the sea - thinking of Matisse, Derain, and the Côte Vermeille, where Collioure is located.

This stretch of coastline is known as “Côte Vermeille” (the Vermilion Coast), and I often use red in my paintings as a tribute to it.

3. .“Saint-Tropez” Côte d’Azur (2024-2025) / size : F6

A view from a hilltop overlooking the port of Saint-Tropez.

I wanted to see this landscape with my own eyes - and paint it.

I visited Saint-Tropez in 2024 and created this piece in an improvised style. It was later exhibited in my solo show in Ebisu in April 2025.
